An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, controls its own performance, and has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word ὄργανον (organon [itself derived from the better-known word ἔργον ergon - work; deed - > ergonomics, etc]) meaning tool.

In the social sciences, organizations are studied by researchers from several disciplines, the most common of which are sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. The broad area is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. Therefore, a number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible,

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

What types of organizations would fund a health care organization?
Q. I am writing a paper that requires me to find an organization or company that would fund a health care organization or social program. The program would be to train young people (ages 18 to 25) for free on basic health care, such as CPR, taking blood pressure, etc. Things people should know how to do in an emergency situation or if the situations simply warrants it. Does anyone know of any organizations or companies that would fund this type of thing? I've been trying to look but have not come up with anything.

A. I am currently researching grants to non-profit organizations in order to find funding for parent support groups for parents of children with disabilities, and would be glad to forward m Excell Spreadsheet on Grants to those providing their e-mail address. I know that insurance companies like Blue Cross and Aetna have set-up foundations to provide grants to non-profits engaged in educating young people in healthcare matters. my email: abelke59@yahoo.com

What national charity organizations sponsor walks, run, ride, or skate marathons?
Q. I'm looking for something like Team In Training or 3Day, but I can't find anything other than those two. I did an 60 mile Walk for AIDS a few years ago and would like to do something like that again. I want an organization that I train for the event (with their assistance, like they have coaches) and that I fundraise for the event at the same time. Any ideas on where to find these organizations??

A. Team in Training really is the best well-known. The only other one I can think of is the Danskin Women's Triathlons -- I know they are held in at least Austin, Texas and Orlando, Florida.

What are all the organizations you can use to become a foreign exchange student?
Q. Hey I'm Jessica. I am thinking about doing a foreign exchange my senior year, to either Japan or Australia. Do any of you know all the organizations you can go through to become a foreign exchange student? Which organization, and which country would you choose? Thank ya:)

A. Rotary has a strong global network of volunteers, so I would definitely check out to your local Rotary Club in addition to the other programs mentioned. If your high school has an Interact Club, that would be a way meet them as well. I don't think it would be a problem to go out your senior year (even though you may miss graduation), but since our students usually go out in their junior year of high school or after graduation, I would check with your school and your local Rotary District's rules to determine if you can go out your senior year. In our program, we send students to countries where they do not speak the language, so that they have to learn it. This adds to a tremendous and life changing experience. You are allowed to… [cont.]
